"Out of The Dark"

(From our "Quarterly
Magazine")
Chiaroscuro is an Italian artistic term used
to describe the dramatic effect of contrasting areas of
light and dark in an artwork, particularly paintings.
It comes from the
combination of the Italian words for "light" and "dark."
Some evidence
exists that ancient Greek and Roman artists used
chiaroscuro effects, but in European painting the
technique was first brought to its full potential by
Leonardo da Vinci in the late 15th century in such
paintings as his Adoration of the Magi (1481).
Leonardo da Vinci's
use of the oil painting technique, still new in Italy,
enabled him to achieve depth and intensity of colouring
and transparency in the effects of light and shade, as
is also apparent in Peter Andrew Jones's paintings in
many cases, the use of strong contrasts between light
and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting the whole
composition.
As part of a studio
project exploring the concept of "Light & Dark"
inspired by the term Chiaroscuro, this painting titled
"Out of The Dark" is one of a pair of paintings created
for the project, the other being "Into The Light" which
