An ancient Myth &
Legend . . . . . .
Carrying a load of
stones in his apron as he traveled across Britain from
Ireland, he stopped for a rest. He had planned to dump
his load of stones to fill in the valley on the other
side of the Stiperstones, known as Hell's Gutter.
As he rose after his
rest on the highest rock of the Stiperstones, his
apron strings snapped and the rocks tumbled out. He
left the rocks scattered all over the ridge and legend
has it that you can smell the brimstone on them in hot
weather.
Drawn by the Artist
in response to his explorations, both of Shropshire's
Myths & Legends and his walks amongst the Hills of
Shropshire and especially the Stiperstones Ridge.
