"The Citadel of The Autarch" is a piece completed by the artist on 28th February 1987 and published by Arrow Books in Great Britain in October of that year.
It is a cover for the Gene Wolfe novel of the same name.

Citadel of The Autarch
In days far distant, still never mind emblazoned in memory past, the numerous visits to a very great number of publishers "often in rooms so small that two people were a crowd . . . . " Peter was commissioned to design a new layout, and paint new cover artwork for a Gene Wolfe series of books, listed above, and we traveled up to town (Covent Garden)  on the Underground to an appointment with the art director of Arrow Books.

Sword of The Lictor
We discussed and negotiated . . . . and re-negotiated endlessly, the cover design and content that Arrow required.
The art director, and ourselves talked-on for fully five hours, and still, remained unable to finally reach a conclusion.

Claw of the conciliator
Exhausted by the effort of keeping up with choices . . . . "in other words,  to keep ourselves fully focussed".
We said our goodbyes, took our leave, and rushed out to find a coffee!!

Shadow of The Torturer
Back at the studio, the next day, Peter did what  he had one so many times before, he took a risk, used his instinct, and invested a fatally new "look" for a series of books which had exhausted their previous incarnation, and re-launched the series with a fresh approach.
The flat background colours were applied with a household decorator's paint  roller, airbrushed over to give the tonal gradations, and then the figures were painted as flat acrylic opaque shapes and then paired in his time-honored oil paint style, giving a complete contrast of techniques within the image.
The paintings are reproduced in their full glory in Volume 2 of our Solar Wind Book here.
