Convergence (Convergent
Series)
(From the book "Solar
Wind Volume 3")
Convergent Series is a
collection of
science fiction and fantasy short stories by Larry
Niven, created by
the artist in 1979 for Orbit Books in the UK, an imprint
of Futura
Publishing.
It is also the name of one of the
short stories in the collection.
 The collection reprints stories
originally appearing in a 1969 collection called “The
Shape of Space”
and ones that are not part of the later and perhaps more
well known
“Known Space” series of stories.
Given the very varied mixture of
stories in the book, both SF & Fantasy, it was
decided in
consultation with art director Patrick Mortemore at
Futura, to create
an image that more typically referenced the other cover
art treatments
the artist had given Niven’s works published by the
company and those
coming along in the publishing plan.
Thus, a simple presentation of an
Alien that called on the way Niven often presented his
characters,
slightly jokey, yet quite serious too, so we have an
alien which on the
one hand appears to be of a classic, almost pulp
magazine style
appearance, and yet, perhaps also a trifle threatening
too, more 1970's
paperback.
A classic Peter Andrew Jones
approach of carefully considered characterisation.
