Intangibles Incorporated
(From the book "Solar Wind Volume 1")
Intangibles Inc. and
Other Stories.
"Intangibles Inc. were represented by a small
man with spectacles and a long, long face. He traveled
about, selling his product to people who didn't really
know what an Intangible was. But once they had one, once
the little man had left an Intangible in their homes, it
was surprising how it slowly began to dominate their
lives . . . . . "
Published in the UK as a Corgi Books
Paperback (Corgi SF Collector's Library) 189 pages
in1975 (first published in 1969 in the USA as
'Neanderthal Planet') this was an illustration that the
Artist was amazed to be asked to create.
"For so long, the Corgi Books series, with
its unique circular vignette presentation of the cover
image, was an icon of the industry, and so, as a young,
yet to begin your career, art student, just assume that
it is something that you were only destined to collect,
not ever participate in creating. Then, suddenly, I'm
being asked to do so, and I thought "Wow! Go for it!"
It was however, probably one of the last in
this iconic presentation as the art director then
changed, and a new way of creating things ushered-in.
It was then that myself, and Art Director
John Munday, embarked upon many a book cover taking
quite a few risks to push the boundaries of the genre as
we went along, and it was indeed a very, very exciting
time and a very productive and exciting relationship,
John always more than happy to give me as much scope as
he felt feasible and workable, and indeed, it was a time
that I think led to the creation of some of my best and
most original cover illustrations.
It was a privilege to work with him.
