"A MYSTERY FROM THE ARCHIVE RESOLVED" And so, the story was . . . . . . 1991 > 1992. The Painting for "Shadow of The Beast" games was created and supplied to Oelrichs Advertising Ltd in Sheffield UK on 5th September 1991 for a (unstated) client of theirs after a preliminary sketch had been supplied in mid July. Many, many amendments to the image had to be carried out during the creation of the image due to the game's development process prior to publication of it, which is why the preliminary sketch differs in content from the final painting. The newly emerging games market was totally hectic back then, and functioned in very different ways to the established paperback books market, which is why . . . . . . . . . when we were then approached directly by our regular client in Trieste, Italy, Edizioni E. Elle, to provide cover art for David Tant's book "Monsters of The Marsh" I decided to take development of the image much further and radically altered it to reflect both the book and how I knew my long established presentations for Elle's games books would benefit them, from a sales perspective. No consultations were needed and the image was made available to Elle on the11th of March 1992. The original painting, in its final form, was purchased by a collector in the U.S.A. |

"MYSTERY OF THE ARCHIVE RESOLVED" After yesterday's "exciting" task of ploughing through ancient (and indeed, faded, stapled, creased and folded) paperwork, I have finally solved the mystery, and was I surprised at what I discovered, no, and indeed, it has been a "useful reminder" of why I decided to later on go "self published". Don't miss tomorrow's post if you want to know how it led to a massive career change! |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 4 of 4 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. “The Killer Mice” is a science fiction story by Kit Reed whose plot follows a group of scientists who, while trying to create a new species of super-intelligent mice, end up triggering dangerous and unexpected events, becoming more intelligent and threatening the safety and balance of the environment. PAJ’s cover artwork features a humanoid being next to an animal plant, all in shades of green, the symbol of nature and life. It seems to illustrate well the idea that human contact with nature can be beneficial, but dangerous (when there are bad intentions), in an excellent plastic representation of the controversial genetics theme of Kit Reed’s book. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 2 of 4 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. By the age of 12, Lillian Hyde Craig or Lil(l)ian Craig Reed, popularly known as Kit Reed, had already written a series of books about a stand-up bunny rabbit. She studied at the College of Notre Dame in Maryland, where she managed not to submit a final paper and instead write a series of short stories, allowed by the nuns of the institution. She was also a Guggenheim Fellow and received a five-year literary fellowship from the Abraham Woursell Foundation. In her professional life, Reed worked as a journalist for several years, for newspapers such as “The St. Petersburg Times” and “The New Haven Register”. She won awards for a series of articles on juvenile courts in Connecticut and was twice named “New England Journalist of the Year”. Reed also served as professor and writer-in-residence at Wesleyan University for a long time. She was married to Joseph Reed and had three children. |

Lillian Hyde Craig or Lil(l)ian Craig Reed, popularly known as Kit Reed, was born on 7 June 1932 in San Diego, California, and died on 24 September 2017 due an inoperable brain tumor. She was an American author of speculative fiction and psychological thrillers, although many of her stories were published as feminist science fiction. She also signed up as Kit Craig. Her mother, Lillian Hyde, was a schoolteacher and her father, John R. Craig, a naval officer. Her father died in the Second World War while on a submarine, probably destroyed by the Japanese. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 3 of 3 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. The cover art, by Peter Andrew Jones, features a mysterious reaper knight on an evil steed, carrying what may be the powerful magic jewel. The backdrop is also thought-provoking and enigmatic: a lightning bolt cuts through a river of lava in a gloomy environment, further reiterating the inspiration in the Tolkenian universe. It’s certainly an (interactive) adventure that will appeal to fantasy lovers. |

Waking up in a castle with armour on his chest and a sword in his fist, he is soon introduced to the gods of Orb, who reveal to him that the world is in danger, because if the servants of Death find the Talisman of Death and invoke its power, all life will be extinguished. Without too much information at first, which makes it easier to immerse themselves and gradually find the solution, the reader-player makes decisions about what to do to prevent this catastrophe. |

Tools had, perforce, to be fashioned and maintained. Machinery kept strong, safe and working! Long gone. So too, the noise and heat and grime. Incessant . . . . Cold and silence greet our ears. Nostalgia for those long ago days - still lingers, in the breasts of visitors. Misty sunlight filters down, through glassless windows, whispering wings, soft cooing doves and quivering bats now inhabit these once-busy shadow rooms. "0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 3 of 3 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. Illustrating ‘The Chalk Giants’ (1974)
for Robert's book was a curious task for Peter
Andrew Jones, as the British and Dutch editions
have different cover art by the legendary artist.
In the Dutch edition, a large sculpture like an
Easter Island moai is left in the background by a
spaceship, while in the British edition a prisoner
is faced with the invasion of a monster in her
quarters. Such thematic variety reflects the
diversity of the stories in the book, mixing
dystopian elements with science fiction. If the
same artist was commissioned for both, it’s
because the publishers know that the artistic
quality of the same creative source, even if
totally altered from one cover to the next, has
everything to work.

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 2 of 3 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. Several of Keith John Kingston Roberts
early stories were written under the pseudonyms
Alistair Bevan and David Stringer. Roberts’ first
novel, “The Furies”, appears in the American TV
series “Bones” in the third episode of the third
season, “Death in the Saddle” (October 9, 2007).
His most important work, however, is his second
novel, “Pavane” (1968), a collection of
interconnected stories Roberts also worked as an
illustrator, creating cover art for the magazines
“New Worlds” and “Science Fantasy” (later
“Impulse”, having edited the last issues of the
magazine under a pseudonym).
Keith John Kingston Roberts has won two Nebula Awards (1971, 1987), six British Science Fiction Association Awards (1980, 1982, 1985, 1986 in two categories, 1987), a Hugo Award (1981), a John W. Campbell Memorial Award (1986) and an Arthur C. Clarke Award (1988). A collection of “novelettes”, “The Chalk Giants” (1974) has Stan Potts as its protagonist, a recurring character in these intersecting tales. It’s the eve of the final conflict of 20th century man. From Potts’ perspective, the reader follows his contact with those left behind or his impressions of how the world has turned out. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 1 of 2 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. The French blog “Les Echos d'Altaïr” dedicated a post to Peter Andrew Jones in January 2010. This post did not follow the pattern of the others, which consisted of a short biography of the author and a selection of a dozen of his best-known works of art. It presents only two of PAJ’s artworks, and gives as an “unpublished” addition extracts from an interview given by the artist for the TF1 documentary “Les Couleurs de l'Irréel”. "0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 3 of 3 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. In the foreground, an interesting, shapeless ice hill looms over the reader. In the background, a chain of mountains seem to form a natural enclosure for another part of this planet, which, although icy, seems to be close to a large star, similar to the sun if it weren’t a reflection of another landscape inside this big red ball. This is how to transform a simple science fiction landscape into an image full of plasticity and meaning, showing the reader that literary criticism is not always a long, theoretical and tedious discussion, but also has its charm. |

Patrouch Jr. This author has a considerable academic output, concentrated in the 1970s and 1980s, massively devoted to Isaac Asimov (1920-1992). Patrouch Jr also published some science fiction short stories in the same period, making him a versatile author who explores science and fiction in parallel. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 5 of 5 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. The cover of The Sword of the Samurai by Peter Andrew Jones shows what is perhaps the pit of demons, with a corpse-like samurai in the foreground staring at the reader-player even before the adventure begins. The red lake with skeletons and the unique path that (perhaps) leads to the volcano in the background give a good idea of the dangers that the reader-player will have to overcome. Any wrong turn and the pond will gain another “swimmer”. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 4 of 5 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. Peter Andrew Jones created the cover art for many of Thomson’s gamebooks, including “The Sword of the Samurai”. Set on the fictional continent of Khul, in the world of Titan (where the adventures of many other “Fighting Fantasy” gamebooks take place), the reader-player must travel to the Well of Demons, help those in need and fight enemies, then try to win the final showdown for the Dai-Katana. This is a gamebook that is different from the other fantasy titles in the pioneering gamebook franchise, mainly because it switches from Tolkenian fantasy to fantastic feudal Japan. |

After years as a (co-)author, Jamie Thomsom went on to work full-time in video game development at Eidos Interactive, publisher of “Tomb Raider”. In 1999, he raised over £1 million to set up his own game development company, Black Cactus. “Warrior Kings” and “Warrior Kings: Battles” were two of his productions, which he then closed down. He invested in a new start-up, Fabled Lands LLP, an intellectual property development company specialising in his own titles to be released as comics, novels and iPhone apps. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 1of 5 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. Jamie Thomson was born in Iran on 14 November 1958. He is a British writer, editor and games developer. He grew up in Brighton and met one of his co-authors, Mark Smith, at Brighton College. He graduated from the University of Kent with a degree in politics and government. Thomson was assistant editor of “White Dwarf” magazine from 1981 to 1984 and a columnist for Games Workshop’s “Warlock”. There, he was one of the developers of the computer game “The Tower of Despair”. From 1984 onwards, he was a prolific and best-selling author. One of his most successful series was “The Way of the Tiger”, six sequential gamebooks whose protagonist is a ninja. Written with Mark Smith, his gamebooks have been published in Japan, France, the USA, Italy and Sweden. Other gamebook series written by him were “Duel Master”, “Falcon”, (all co-written with Mark Smith) and “Fabled Lands” (co-written with Dave Morris). He also co-wrote three gamebooks for the “Fighting Fantasy” series: “Talisman of Death”, “Sword of the Samurai” (again with Mark Smith) and “The Keep of the Lich Lord” (again with Dave Morris). |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 3of 3 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. John Varley’s style is very reminiscent of Robert A. Heinlein’s, both in its descriptive writing style and in its themes of societies and free love. Winner of the Nebula (1979), Hugo (1980) and Locus (1980) awards, "Titan" is the first book in the “Gaea Trilogy”. It tells of an expedition to Saturn where the protagonists encounter a centaur people, aliens, angels and a strange “torus”, all with sudden changes in behavior for no reason and a lot of unpredictability. Peter Andrew Jones brought to life the cover art, which depicts a strange tentacled monster in the foreground while a vertical ship is in the background. This is perhaps the most enigmatic artwork, as no key element of the narrative is presented explicitly. The strange creature, the vast universe in the background, and the ship in an unusual position, however, disturb and instigate the reader to get to know this new world. |

0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 2 of 3 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. John Varley wrote several novels, his first attempt being “Gas Giant”, and several short stories, collected in the series “The Eight Worlds”. These stories take place a century or two after a race of mysterious and omnipotent aliens, the Invaders, have almost completely eradicated humans from Earth (they consider whales and dolphins to be the superior terrestrial life forms and humans just a dangerous infestation). But human beings have inhabited practically every other corner of the solar system, often using biological modifications learnt, in part, by listening to alien communications. “Overdrawn at the Memory Bank” was adapted and televised on PBS in 1983. In addition, two of his short stories – “Options” and “Blue Champagne” – were adapted into episodes of the Sci-Fi Channel’s short-lived TV series Welcome to Paradox in 1998. In the Hollywood industry, he contributed to the writing of the film Millennium. |

0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 1 of 3 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. John Varley was born in Austin, Texas, but grew up in Fort Worth and later moved to Port Arthur. He also lived in places like Portland, Eugene, Oregon, New York, San Francisco, Berkeley and Los Angeles throughout his life. He under-graduated from Netherlander High School and then went to Michigan State University thanks to a national merit scholarship. He went on to study Physics and then English, but then dropped out and moved to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. There, he worked at various unskilled jobs, depended on St Anthony’s Mission for meals and even begged. Then he decided to venture out as a writer. |

"ARCHIVE MAINTENANCE DAY" (6 of 6) Sorting through my portfolio of printer's proofs. Another of the paintings I created for Orbit Books/Futura Publications series. In The Ocean of Night, by Gregory Benford. This was a risk - back then, publishers were very demanding on space hardware images, and the idea of making the spaceship very small, was considered risky. But I felt that as long as it was perceived to be in an untypical composition, it could work. It did! W.H.Smith, then the UK's biggest bookshop chain, decided they would "take any book that had PAJ cover art" - this was because the UK's typical book edition length/sales volume was 9,500 copies, but I had accelerated it to just under 100,000 copies. So, whilst cover proofs were used by publisher's sales reps, out on the road in their cars, driving around the county into high street shops to show shop managers the range of books that could be supplied to them, their workload was reduced, as they did not need to bother showing proofs with my paintings on. The shop manager would still need to respond with a 'yes" as the sales rep quickly flipped through their folder of proofs and tick an order box with a Biro pen, but didn't have to stop and consider "yes or no." Publishers still supplied me with copies for my portfolio because whilst they didn't need to, they still got printed, embedded in the overall printing procedure for all the publisher's books that month. Available, signed by me, if you'd like one. Price on application. |

"ARCHIVE MAINTENANCE DAY" (5 of 6) Still sorting through my portfolio of printer's proofs. It was always great fun creating cover art for Larry Niven's novels. One of the paintings I created for Orbit Books/Futura Publications series. These rarities were used by publisher's sales reps, out on the road in their cars, driving around the county into high street shops to show shop managers the range of books that could be supplied to them. The manager would respond with a 'yes\no" as the sales rep quickly flipped through their briefcase folder of proofs until the shop manager completed his/her choice. As a courtesy, publishers supplied me with copies for my portfolio. Available, signed by me, if you'd like one. Price on application. |

"ARCHIVE MAINTENANCE DAY" (4 of 6) Another "early years of my career" classic! Sorting through my portfolio of printer's proofs. One of the very, very earliest paintings I created for SF novels. For Panther Books, delivered to their office in London's Soho.
