"ARCHIVE MAINTENANCE DAY" (3 of 6) Wow, now, this really IS old! Sorting through my portfolio of printer's proofs. One of the very, very earliest paintings I created for SF novels. For Panther Books, delivered to their office in London's Soho. These rarities were used by publisher's sales reps, out on the road in their cars, driving around the county into high street shops to show shop managers the range of books that could be supplied to them. The manager would respond with a 'yes\no" as the sales rep quickly flipped through their briefcase folder of proofs until the shop manager completed his/her choice. As a courtesy, publishers supplied me with copies for my portfolio. Available, signed by me, if you'd like one. Price on application. |

0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 4 of 4 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. Peter Andrew Jones was responsible for illustrating the cover art for Norman. The sombre atmosphere of the scene emphasises the tone of mystery and darkness. The unusual presence of a knight apparently threatening a defenceless lady also makes the reader curious. It is precisely in this environment that the reader will explore this universe through some illuminated parts. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 3 of 4 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. The Gorean Saga is a long-running series of adventure and science fantasy novels, which began in December 1966 with “Tarnsman of Gor”, encountered a cancellation in its continuity for many years, until it was resumed in 2001 with the publication of “Witness of Gor”. In addition to this, Norman has also produced a separate science fiction series called “Telnarian Histories”, as well as other works of fiction, non-fiction and a collection of short stories. Norman said that the three biggest influences on his work are Homer, Freud and Nietzsche. According to him, the books in the “Gor” series are also intellectual, philosophical and psychological. Themes such as slavery and characteristics of modern society are criticised, very reminiscent of the lifestyle of Ancient Rome. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 5 of 6 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. In Brazil, the French edition (with another creation by PAJ) played a key role in creating a gamebook culture in the country: Osmar Saraiva, publisher of Marques Saraiva publishing house, was at the Frankfurt book fair and came across this edition, realising that this type of playful book could have a reader-player audience in Brazil. Saraiva was thus a “merchant of RPG culture” for Brazil, and from Rio de Janeiro the gamebooks soon gained readers-players all over the country. |

Whereas book titles used to be at the top, in this gamebook the title is in the centre of the image. Peter Andrew Jones masterfully “stretched” the body of the conjured dragon to take the usual place of the titles, and his striking art made this (and some other) gamebooks eye-catching from cover to text. A later edition also had its cover art altered by the same artist, just as striking. |

The difficulty of “The Warlock of Firetop Mountain” is considered easy, perhaps so as not to traumatise a novice reader-player. It is possible to beat the final boss with not too high attributes if the right choices are made. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 2 of 6 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. Criticised by some for being too simple (since its authors Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson were not writers, but game designers) and acclaimed by lovers of nerd/geek culture in the 80s and 90s, this gamebook was a revolution in its time, and overcame the limitations of the first computer games and video games of the time. In this “solitaire RPG”, like all the others in the pioneering “Fighting Fantasy” series of gamebooks, the reader makes the hero's decisions and faces the consequences of their choices. There are many endings, but when you reach the 400th paragraph (the mini-chapters in the form of text boxes that make up this textual hybrid), the reader-player knows their best performance. |

"0 BLOG DO ESTUDIO" Blog article 1 of 1 by Pedro Panhoca. http://www.peterandrewjones.net/blog-sa2024.htm. John Kilian Houston Brunner was born on 24 September 1934 in Preston Crowmarsh, Oxfordshire, and died of a heart attack in Glasgow on 25 August 1995. He was a British author of science fiction novels and short stories, but also published articles and poems, especially in fanzines. Brunner studied at St Andrew´s Prep School in Pangbourne. At the age of 17, he wrote his first novel, “Galactic Storm”, and published it under the pseudonym Gill Hunt (he would later use others such as K. H. Brunner, John Loxmith, Trevor Staines, Ellis Quick, Henry Crosstrees Jr. and Keith Woodcott). He then went on to study at Cheltenham College. He served as an officer in the Royal Air Force for two years (from 1953 to 1955) and married Marjorie Rosamond Sauer in 1958, the year he became a full-time writer. He began by writing conventional space operas, later moving on to experimentalism. “The Jagged Orbit” (1969, winner of best science fiction novel and the BSFA award, both in 1970) has 100 chapters of text ranging from a single syllable to several pages, for example. Brunner possibly invented the term “worm” (in computing) and the prediction of the emergence of computer viruses in the novel “The Shockwave Rider”, as well as exploring previously rare topics such as genetic engineering, same-sex marriage, online encyclopaedias, the legalisation of cannabis and the development of Viagra. His books “Stand on Zanzibar” (1968, winner of the 1969 Hugo Award), “The Jagged Orbit” (1969), “The Sheep Look Up” (1972) and “The Shockwave Rider” (1975) form the “Club of Rome Quartet”, in honour of the Club of Rome, whose report “The Limits to Growth” (1972) warned of the terrible effects of overpopulation. |
||
Brunner was an active member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament organisation and wrote the lyrics to “The H-Bomb's Thunder”, which was sung at the Aldermaston Marches. The short stories “Some Lapse of Time” and “The Last Lonely Man” were adapted for TV in the BBC science fiction series “Out of the Unknown”, in series 1 (1965) and 3 (1969) respectively. For television, he also wrote the script for the science fiction film “The Terrornauts” (1967), by Amicus Productions. The Italian version of “The Jagged Orbit” received a cover illustration by Peter Andrew Jones. The novel is set in the United States in 2014, when interracial conflicts have reached an untenable point. The Gottschalks, a mafia-like organisation, take advantage of this situation and sell weapons to anyone capable of buying them, and a division develops within the cartel itself. The cover art depicts, in a single image, the arrival of the future (with the presence of the spaceship), Earth’s submission to the new problems (by the crowded and passive crowd) and the possibility of technology making it its slave (with the robots giving the orders). A great summary and attractive resource for the reader who wants to know what 2014 was supposed to be like in the land of Uncle Sam. |

An interesting article, albeit brief, found on the “Fonts in use” blog was dedicated to the gamebook “The Warlock of Firetop Mountain” and its board game and computer versions. The author Florian Hardwig, in 2018, makes brief notes on the Bradley font used in the products that received the artwork of Peter Andrew Jones. The full text can be accessed at > https://fontsinuse.com/uses/22948/the-warlock-of-firetop-mountain-gamebook-puff Even though the author’s comments are brief, the article is worth a visit for the wealth of photos taken of the products, which go beyond the cover art. A great source on fonts. |

"IN THE STUDIO TODAY" Current project on the go. A now binding a book for a collector > PAINTINGS OF SOUTH SHROPSHIRE The top of Hazler Hill, and the views from the top, overseeing much of Shropshire, and my discovery of paths for future easel-toting walks. As is always the case, it was “along the way”, in this case a simple bridleway called Snatchfields Lane, that I saw a simple sight that was a joy to behold. A yellow Wagtail caught in the mid-morning light that was so bright it even blessed the concrete fencepost with textures no painter could ignore. Everything has a character all of its own and I always defer to my first Art teacher’s words namely “you have to really see it, in order to paint it.” Thus what I call “visual vigilance” is a skill at least as valuable to a rambling painter as knowing how to paint.” And, now, today is gluing and finessing day! |

"IN THE STUDIO TODAY" Starting 2 new projects. First one, printing and binding of > PAINTINGS OF SOUTH SHROPSHIRE book. Back in history, Snailbeach Mine in Shropshire, not that far from the studio, was one of the biggest and richest lead mines in the Middle of what is now the UK, and I even read once that people used to travel from as far away as China, down the Silk Road, to come and purchase lead, so valuable was it and there is evidence that the Romans also mined there. This painting was one I did of an old rusty tractor in a shed that was used as a winch for the mine shaft. |
