After all the disruptions over recent times, Covid, Lock downs and subsequent disruptions, I hope to, finally, resurrect the local exhibition showing (which I do "just for fun") so, fingers crossed - on-wards!

The internal illustrations inside “Starship Traveller” range from two-dimensional (landscapes, weapons, meteorites) to three-dimensional (NPCs and action scenes), some depicting exactly what the text describes and others more polysemic, abstract. The humanoid figures are very reminiscent of characters from old TV series such as Star Trek and are worth the nostalgia.

“Starship Traveller” was the first science fiction gamebook, the work of creative Steve Jackson (UK), the plot isn’t the most attractive and the rules system is a little complicated compared to fantasy gamebooks, but it’s worth it for its boldness and pioneering spirit in the genre. It opened doors for other science fiction gamebooks in its own collection (“Fighting Fantasy”) and clearly inspired the first Lusophone gamebook "Planeta Alfa" (“Alpha planet”, in rough translation), by Ricardo Pinheiro.

Peter Andrew Jones illustrated the cover art for “All My Sins Remembered”, a universe of strange, threatening and mutant creatures, where Otto McGavin acts as a secret agent for the Confederation. A gentle and unassuming man, two years of intensive hypnotic training have transformed him into a Master Operator with TB II. His technology allows him to take on the appearance and personality of any enemy. And to protect the legal rights of humans and non-humans alike, he is prepared to lie, cheat, steal and kill on his journey across the galaxy. Otto McGavin is peaceful and idealistic by nature, who seeks employment with the Confederation because he believes in it and its mission to protect the rights of humans and non-humans alike. The only problem is that the Confederation needs him as Chief Operator for its secret service, TBII, and TBII wants Otto as a spy, thief and assassin. PAJ has possibly materialised Otto himself and a victim of his actions, in a strange land far away from Earth. The gradient tone from red to light green also represents the transition of how things work between the planets. Yet another feature very well utilised by the artist in this inviting cover art.

Joe William Haldeman also wrote two of the first original novels based on the universe of the 1960s television series “Star Trek”, “Planet of Judgment” (August 1977) and “World Without End” (February 1979).
Two of his first stories, written overnight as part of a college course, earned him his first publications: “Out of Phase” in “Galaxy” magazine (1969), and another published in “Amazing Stories”, later adapted for “The Twilight Zone”. Haldeman also wrote a Hollywood film script: “Robot Jox” (1990).
The directors and past presidents of the Science Fiction Writers of America chose Haldeman as SFWA's 27th Grand Master in 2009, and he received the corresponding “Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award” for lifetime achievement as a writer.
Joe William Haldeman is a lifetime member of the “Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America” (SFWA), having received awards such as the “Pegasus Award”, “Inkpot”, “Hugo”, “John W. Campbell Memorial”, “Nebula”, “Locus”, “Rhysling”, “World Fantasy”, “James Tiptree, Jr.”.

From 1983 to 2014, Joe William Haldeman was a professor of writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1965, Haldeman married Mary Gay Potter, known as Gay Haldeman. He received a bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Maryland in 1967. In 1975, he received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
In the Vietnam War, he served as a combat engineer and struggled to adapt to civilian life after returning home. His wartime experience inspired his first novel, “War Year”; his later novels, such as “The Hemingway Hoax” and “The Forever War”, continued to explore the experience of soldiers in wartime and after returning home.

Joe William Haldeman was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on 9 June 1943 and is an American science fiction author. He has also published under the pseudonym Robert Graham. He lived in Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., Bethesda (Maryland) and Anchorage (Alaska) as a child. Today he lives in Gainesville, Florida, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is best known for his novel “The Forever War” (1974), which was inspired by his experiences as a combat soldier in the Vietnam War. In 2012, he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

AUTUMN
"As summer begins to slip quietly into autumn, the sun becomes lower in the sky sending weaker rays to the earth highlighting the golden tones of autumn. The summer breeze turns cooler on the skin and the days become shorter with evenings becoming longer. Dewy spiders' webs on hedges and misty mornings before the autumn sun chases them away.
Summer flowers have now disappeared and autumn flowers take their place in the form of asters, chrysanthemums and Elysium bringing some colour to the autumn scene. The falling leaves from the trees make a carpet of gold, russet and bronze inviting children to run through them kicking them in the air to watch them dancing in the breeze.
Small animals are busy gathering their food to store during the winter months and swallows gather together, sweeping high in the sky to fly to warmer climates for the winter. Farmers are busy in the fields ploughing and sowing their winter wheat.
People are changing into their warmer clothes and preparing for Harvest Festivals. A time to be thankful and grateful for what we have".

Gavin Rothery's curation begins with paintings with red and orange backgrounds, some of which have already been reviewed here. Then there are grey backgrounds and interior spaceships and military bases from the future. In the second part, more "nocturnal" environments, with the black background of the universe, contrast with daytime images, some of which retain the title of the product (perhaps due to the absence of the original artwork without the signs for which it was intended).

SUMMER
"Spring proved that life exists under the cold earth of winter, and on the trees above it, with small buds growing and grass becoming thicker. After Spring's gentle rays, the sun becomes stronger and more powerful warming the earth.
The days become longer and brighter. Leaves on the trees a bright green in Spring, become larger and a darker green in summer. Blossom on the Blackthorn and Hawthorn, white candles on Chestnut trees, with flowers in meadows, gardens bringing needy pollen for bees and insects. Daffodils, now at rest, give way to daises. Roses spring from buds into beautiful flowers, delighting us with their perfume and many colours,
Birds sing in the trees greeting the dawn, the young ones having fled their nests to explore their new world.
The sea, instead of looking grey and cold, becomes shades of turquoise and blue in the summer sun and gently laps the shore inviting a swim or paddle.
However we have to remember that the earth needs some soft rain in summer so that nature can give us these beautiful flowers to enjoy, the birds can continue singing and small animals can continue to flourish.

“The female man” is based on the idea of parallel realities, as there are four central characters who visit each other (its not clear how): Joanna (a woman from the real world, i.e. planet Earth in 1970), Jeannine (the stereotype of the fragile woman, who lives in a world where patriarchy rules with vigour), Jael (a woman from the future, who lives in a world where men and women have been at war for decades) and Janet (a woman from an even more distant future, where all the men died centuries ago because of a plague).
Peter Andrew Jones was responsible for the cover art for “The female man”. In it, the empowered woman is dressed in clothes that denote authority in a future time, and the collared slave (man) shows total submission to her. The idea of female empowerment is emphasised not only in the text, but also in the visuals, from the breasts on show to the futuristic make-up and what the woman controls, a sword and her slave.

Joanna Russ, a lesbian, declared herself a socialist feminist, with particular admiration for the work and theories of Clara Fraser. Joanna’s texts contain anger and bitterness, as well as humour and irony.
Joanna was also an essayist, a columnist for “The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction”, the author of theatre plays and various non-fiction works, such as literary criticism and feminist theory. For Joanna, fiction and non-fiction were ways of engaging theory with the real world, so much so that her magnus opus "The Female Man" (1970) can be read from both a theoretical and fictional perspective.
In the last years of her life, Joanna published little due to chronic pain, back problems and extreme fatigue.

Joanna Russ has published more than 50 short stories throughout her career, as well as books and essays. Her first science fiction short story was published in 1959 and was called “Nor Custom Stale”. In the 1960s, Joana began to make a name for herself as a writer with the award for her debut book “Picnic on Paradise”, at a time when science fiction was made up massively of male writers, and she was a pioneer in female science fiction. It was the beginning of one of the first female science fiction writers to seriously analyse the cultural and literary impacts and implications of the genre. Throughout her career, Joana had several of her works winning or being finalists for prestigious awards, such as the Hugo Award (for "Souls"), the Nebula Award (for "When It Changed") and the Tiptree Award (again for "When It Changed"), to name just a few.

Joanna Russ was born on 22 February 1937 in Bronx/New York and died on 29 April 2011 in Tucson. She was an American writer, professor and feminist. She published texts in the fields of science fiction, fantasy, literary criticism and feminism. Her parents were Evarett I. and Bertha, both teachers.
She began creating works of fiction from an early age, with illustrations, comics, poems and stories, usually sewing them into hand-bound booklets. She graduated from William Howard Taft High School and was selected as one of the top ten students by the Westinghouse Science Talent Search.
She graduated from Cornell University, where she studied with Vladimir Nabokov, in 1957. She obtained her master's degree from the Yale School of Drama and has taught at various universities.
She was a full professor at the University of Washington.

PAJ's very first and most striking artwork of his career.
Peter Andrew Jones was responsible for illustrating "A Castle of Bone". This is a book that combines dark fantasy, mythology and starts out intensely, and may appeal to young readers and magic aficionados, for example. The cover art is eye-catching for combining shades of brown, beige and ochre and presenting the said castle of bones not as an obvious representation of it, but a kind of altered and mysterious silhouette.

Penelope Farmer's first publication was "The China People", a collection of literary fairy tales for young people (1960). "The Summer Birds" was considered too long a written story for this collection, so it was rewritten as the first chapter of her first novel for children of the same name. In 1963, this book received a Carnegie Medal recommendation and was cited as an outstanding book by the American Library Association. "The Summer Birds" was soon followed by its sequels: "Emma in Winter" (1966) and "Charlotte Sometimes" (1969), and by "A Castle of Bone" (1972), "Year King" (1977), "Thicker than Water" (1989), "Penelope: A Novel" (1993) and "Granny and Me" (1998).

After attending boarding school, Penelope Farmer studied history at St Anne's College, Oxford, and did postgraduate studies at Bedford College, University of London.
She visited South Africa in 1994, talking to people about their views on the election and wrote an article about it in "Index on Censorship". In 2000, she published an article on the challenges faced by the Hong Kong Chinese community in the UK.
In 2012, according to the author herself (her personal website), she was living in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and described herself as a published writer for many years and missed by many people, especially children and grandchildren.

Twin sister and third daughter of Hugh Robert MacDonald (died 26 May 2004) and Penelope Boothby Farmer, Penelope Jane Farmer (born 14 June 1939) is an English fiction writer known for her fantasy novels for young people. Throughout Farmer's life, identity and twinship are defining pillars of her understanding. Completing the siblings are her older brother, Tim, and younger sister, Sally. This is perhaps Peter Andrew Jones´ most mysterious cover art, since in the background little is known of the architecture of space, and in the foreground it is unclear which of the characters are Winters or Summers, and why the apparent calm of the silver beings while the girl in yellow appears to be in danger.
These voids that the visual text leaves the reader can only be filled if they venture into the wormhole for the reading of this work, and may (or may not) better understand the illustration.
Indeed, the above image is an otherwise unseen image from inside the front cover of the book, a very unusual way of creating and presenting a paperback book cover.
Works of art like this tend to survive longer than those that merely reproduce the obvious, and mysteries like this are never exhausted in PAJ´s works.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen´s 1844 fairy tale of the same name, Joan D. Vinge's “The Snow Queen” is set on a predominantly oceanic planet called Tiamat.
Tiamat's suns orbit a black hole, which facilitates interstellar wormhole travel and connects it to the rest of the civilised galaxy. There are two clans on this planet: the Winters, who seek technological progress and contact with other planets, and the Summers, who are conservative to tradition.
Every 150 years the queens of each clan take turns controlling the matriarchy.

Joan D. Vinge 's first published story, “Tin Soldier”, a novella, appeared in the 14th edition of the anthology “Orbit”, in 1974.
Her stories have also appeared in “Analog”, “Millennial Women”, “Asimov's Science Fiction” and several “Best of the Year” anthologies, many of them award-winning. In addition to her magnus opus “The Snow Queen”, “Eyes of Amber” also won the 1977 Hugo Awards as best novelette.
Vinge has been nominated for several other Hugo and Nebula awards, as well as the John W. Campbell Award for best new writer.
Her novel “Psion” was nominated as best young adult book by the American Library.

On March 2, 2002, Joan D. Vinge was in a serious car accident that left her with sequels that, along with her fibromyalgia, left her unable to write. It was only after five years, in early 2007, that she was able to return to writing.
Her post-accident book is the novelisation of the 2011 film “Cowboys & Aliens”.

Joan D. Vinge's first marriage was with fellow science fiction author Vernor Vinge and lasted seven years, from 1972 to 1979, and since 1980 she has been married to science fiction editor James Frenkel, with whom she has two children and they live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
An interesting thing about Vinge is that, in addition to writing, she also makes and sells her own dolls.

Peter Andrew Jones created the cover art for both of Jerry Pournelle's works: "Future History", a work that is pure military science fiction, and "King David's spaceship", which shows a civilisation rebuilding as it may be the target of a neighbouring threat.
In the former, PAJ employs the futuristic military tank well in confrontation with the spaceship. In the second, a warrior with a melee weapon – a mention of the earliest times of a people seeking to get back on their feet – looks to the horizon and holds his position despite the menacing ship appearing in the fiery sky.
Only a talented artist like Peter Andrew Jones, who grew up with military inspirations, could better portray the spirit of the narratives from the first cover to its reader.

While still working at Boeing, Jerry Pournelle sent his firsts science fiction short stories to John W. Campbell, the editor of "Astounding Science Fiction", but only "Peace with Honor" was accepted and published. Pournelle has always been involved with military themes.
From 2008, Pournelle begins to fight a brain tumour. In 2011 he joins Gina Smith, John C. Dvorak, Ted Rall and several other reporters from Byte.com to launch an independent technical and political news website, "NewDomain", where he was director until his death. In 2014 he suffers a stroke but returns to writing in 2015.
Famous for creating situations, complex plots and politically incorrect solutions, he won awards such as the "Inkpot Award" (1979), "John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer" (1973), "Prometheus Hall of Fame" (1991), "Prometheus Award" (1992), "Seiun Award for Foreign Novel" (1998), "Heinlein Society Award" (2005) and "National Space Society Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Award".

During the Korean War, Jerry Pournelle served in the Army. He then attended the University of Iowa and the University of Washington, where he completed Bachelor's and master’s degrees in Psychology in 1955 and 1958, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Political Science in March 1964.
Pournelle married Roberta Jane Isdell in 1959, and they had five children. Roberta and Philip and Jennifer, two of his children, have co-written science fiction with him, as well as such science fiction greats as Roland J. Green, Michael F. Flynn, Steven Barnes, John F. Carr – with the latter he edited an anthology – and the economist Stefan T. Possony.
Pournelle claims to have been the first author to write part of a book using a personal computer word processor, in 1977. In 1984 he was editor and columnist for “Survive” magazine.

Jerry Eugene Pournelle was born on August 7, 1933, in the town of Shreveport, Louisiana, and died on September 8, 2017. He was a US scientist in the field of operations research and human factors research and worked in the aerospace industry being one of the founders of the Citizens Advisory Council on National Space Policy, was an essayist, journalist, whose focus was the computer industry, astronomy and space exploration, having written for "Byte" magazine, and one of the first bloggers, author of views in "Chaos Manor", but dedicated his career to science fiction writing, having won several awards. Pournelle even served as President "Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America".
Pournelle lived with his family in Capleville, Tennessee. His father, Percival Pournelle, was a radio advertising executive and general manager of several radio stations, and his mother, Ruth Pournelle, was a teacher, but also worked in a munitions factory during World War II. He attended St. Anne's Elementary School and Coleville Consolidated Elementary School, and then studied at Christian Brothers College.

Jack Womack was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1956, but now lives in New York City with his wife and daughter. This writer uses science fiction as a way of making social criticism, flirting with the cyberpunk sub-genre.
His "Dryco" series consists of five books, two of which are illustrated by Peter Andrew Jones.
The cover of "Ambient" shows a clear figure that illustrates well Womack's technique in combining sensuality and action, seen the creature's well-defined muscles coupled with its weapon (recurrently witnessed in heavier erotica such as S&M). The blue rays complete the scene showing the sci-fi touch employed. In turn, in "Terraplane" the highlight goes to the Beetle that seems to leave New York behind. Its mystery is to know if it is the old or the new version of the city, in an interesting contrast of silver and scarlet red. As well as the time travels of the characters and the combination between the alternative past and the future, the art of Peter Andrew Jones proves powerful enough to pervade and remain in the imagination of art lovers for a time that will certainly be eternal.

"Ambient" is a dystopian romance, the first in his series. Set in a decadent and violent 21st century New York, it tells the story of O'Malley, a very special bodyguard to Dryden, CEO and ruthless tycoon, and his attempts to woo the beautiful Avalon. What begins as a simple unrequited love affair quickly turns into a complicated death trap involving corporate intrigue, murderous family rivalries, and twisted subcultures, blending a sensual narrative with horror.
"Terraplane", on the other hand, is a work of science fiction replete with historical elements itself. In it, DryCo has sent two employees – retired general Luther and his bodyguard Jake –, to post-communist Moscow. There a rival multinational company called Krasnaya dominates society. Luther and Jake discover that Krasnaya has two quantum physicists under duress: Oktobriana Osipova and Alekine. They manage to kidnap Oktobriana, but their escape fails and sends them back to 1939 in an alternate version of late New York history, an apartheid dystopia of that time.
